Trauma Informed Yoga is a continuing education course open to RYT-200 or above certified yoga teachers. The course reviews the science, practice, and special considerations necessary to support and prepare a yoga teacher to work with individuals affected by traumatic life events and/or PTSD. This 20 hour training covers the origins of trauma and how they affect health and functionality, the basic theory and principals of trauma sensitive yoga, anatomy of the nervous system and neuroplasticity, and methods to support the unique needs of trauma affected individuals and their families. In addition to the core overview of trauma sensitive yoga, attention is given to the specific knowledge necessary to compassionately work with students affected by the military or first responder service, incarceration, addiction, sexual and physical abuse, and eating disorders. Designed to raise awareness as well as provide yoga teachers with tools and practical techniques for providing qualified yoga classes to special needs groups, this course includes lecture & discussion with ERYT-500 and C-IAYT yoga teachers, practice & yoga class parameters and recommendations, and offers additional discussion with health care individuals and trauma survivors to fully develop both awareness and sensitivity to this important subject.
This course is open to anyone interested in expanding their understanding of yoga as therapy for trauma survivors. Trauma Sensitive yoga is one of the Heartwood RYT-500 required courses.
